My mind was jumbled with so many questions that I didn’t know where to start. “Who is Queen? And is she… like me?” I patted my chest, feeling a swell of hope in my blood. “Is she human?”

He patted the bed, and I sat down. He pulled up a chair and straddled the back to face me. “Queen is human. She took in me and my brothers when we were chits and raised us. She did not birth us, but she is our mother.”

His actions began to make more sense now. He recognized me as a human, and so he sought to protect me out of love for his mother.

“We’re going to my home,” he continued. “When this boat lands, we will have short journey to our den, and then you’ll get to meet Queen for yourself.”

My hands curled into the bare bed pad. “And what happens there?”

His head cocked. “What do you mean?”

“What will we do?”

His lips twitched into a smile. “We’ll live.”

“But how? This planet seems so dangerous. What exactly is in the dark?”

He folded his hands on the back of the chair. “Ah, the dark.”

I pursed my lips. “Yeah, you know, that thing that almost killed us.”

“Planet Kew’s rotation is such that the dark encompasses half the planet at all times. And in the dark is where the Ev live.”

“The Ev?”

“A variety of creatures without the ability of sight, but excellent scent, sonar, and hearing. They feed on whatever they can find. That is why the city where the Hari live, Geveen, is domed. It is the only thing that protects them from the Ev. Pasol is on a massive platform that lowers underground to seal everyone inside. All residents have ways to protect themselves from the Ev, who can’t go underground or over the water. Some of them fly, but not very far or very high.”

I had never imagined Pasol could be lowered. No wonder it was such a concentrated city. I had never thought that it was because they needed to remain hidden for an entire month at a time.

“That’s why we had to get to the water, right? Because the Ev wouldn’t come here?”

“Right,” he said. “And by the time we arrive at shore, the dark will have passed. I had intended to get here much quicker, but that had been when I was traveling alone.”

I bit my nail. “I weighed you down.”

“Bringing you with me delayed my departure but seeing you in Geveen felt like a gift.”

“How did you know I was a human while I was wearing that bulky suit and helmet?”

“I saw your hand.” He held his up and splayed his two fingers. “Through a tear in your suit.”

I flexed my hand, grateful he’d seen my human-like appendage. “I thought you wanted to eat me or kill me.”

He smiled. “Neither.”

“Would that thing with feelers have eaten me?”

He waited a beat before answering. “Yes.”

I shuddered. “But you don’t know what the Hari want with me?”

He drummed his fingers on the back of the chair as his eyes went hard.
